Graph handling in Pro/3 is handled by a built-in general directed graph handling package. This package includes graph drawing functionality which generates MS Visio Import files. You have some ways of changing the style of drawing, i.e. by adjusting and supplementing some of the components. To do this you must understand the steps involved in drawing graphs.

DEPENDENCY GRAPHS - DERIVATION GRAPHS

Graph drawing is requested in Pro/3's Knowledge Dependency Graphs and Trees-window in the Rules-menu.

The requested graph is generated as a MS Visio import file.

The file consists four sections.

1. FIXED HEADER  SECTION

Template,"Basic Flowchart.vst"

2. SHAPE-MAPPING SECTION

Master,"CN","CN","c:\\pro3\\exe\\Pro3_DG.vss"
Master,"AN","AN","c:\\pro3\\exe\\Pro3_DG.vss"
Master,"SG1","DR1","c:\\pro3\\exe\\Pro3_DG.vss"
Master,"SG2","DR2","c:\\pro3\\exe\\Pro3_DG.vss"
:

Each line corresponds to a mapping between a Pro/3 shape name and a corresponding shape in a MS VISIO stencil file. A Pro/3-generated graph element with shape "SG1" will be drawing using symbol "DR1" in the Pro3_DG.vss stencil file (provided with Pro/3). The mapping is actually copied from a Pro/3 file called VisioDP_Headers.txt.

3. SHAPE SECTION

Shape,"N1","AN","Dependents of car fleet exists 2005-07-04T10:16:12.000+00:00 rac"
Shape,"N2","SR3","is projected|INC-EXP|1|0 "
:

The lines correspond to the individual symbols in the graphs, e.g. symbol "N2" is drawn with shape "SR3" from section 2. The text to the right is the label drawn inside the symbol.

4. LINK SECTION

Link,"N15","CN","","N2","N3"
Link,"N16","CN","","N4","N2"
:

The lines corresponds to the edges in the graph, e.g. link "N15" (using the mandatory connection symbol "CN"), is drawn from "N2" to "N3".

COLOR OPTIONS

Graphs are generated in colors, and colors are either used as solid fills or only for the lines defining the symbols. This is controlled by solid color-option in the Output Preferences-window. The mapping files and the stencil file exist in a solid-color variety and line-color only variety:

  • VisioDP_Headers.txt (line colors) vs. VisioDP_Headersc.txt (solid colors)
  • VisioIR_Headers.txt (line colors) vs. VisioIR_Headersc.txt (solid colors)
  • Pro3_DG.vss (line colors) vs. Pro3_DG.vss (solid colors)

CUSTOMIZATION

You can customize the graph drawing set-up essentially in two ways:

  • You can change the VisioDP_Headers.txt file, such that e.g. "SG1" maps to a different symbol than "DR1" such as "DR2".
  • You can make your own stencil file, and make a mapping to the shapes in this file. Note in this regard the convention that a solid-color variety (if used), has the same name as the line color variety, except that the former ends with c. Note also that the file names are case-sensitive and that the file extension of the mapping file must be txt (lower case).

Obviously, you need to know the symbol names used by Pro/3 for this to make sense. Pro/3 symbol names consists of a symbol type, followed by an optional size integer, followed by an optional symbol sub-type:

SYMBOL TYPE KNOWLEDGE NODE SIZE SUB-TYPE
CN Represents an edge (dependency) between any types of knowledge nodes.

INEXACT RULE NETWORKS

Graphs are requested in the Inexact Rules-window (Rules-menu). The procedure and customization possibilities are similar to those for drawing dependency graphs. The same stencil file is used (Pro3_DG.vss), however a different mapping file is used (VisioDP_Headers.txt).
